A bronze statue has been unveiled in Cardiff to honour the late The Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan, the first First Minister of Wales and one of the most influential figures in modern Welsh politics.
Widely regarded as the"Father of Welsh Devolution", Rhodri Morgan devoted his life to serving the people of Wales with dedication and integrity. His leadership played a defining role in shaping devolved government and strengthening Welsh democracy.
The statue has been installed outside the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) and the historic Pierhead Building to commemorate his life and enduring legacy.
The unveiling ceremony, held yesterday, was chaired by former Welsh Government Minister Jane Elizabeth Hutt. Among those delivering speeches were Deputy First Minister Siôned Williams, former First Minister Mark Drakeford, Finance Minister Elin Jones, Rhodri Morgan's widow Julie Morgan, The Right Honourable Lord Mayor Michael Michael, and Councillor Dilwar Ali, alongside other distinguished guests.
Speakers thanked the trustees who had spent the past eight years planning and fundraising to make the memorial a reality. They described Rhodri Morgan as a visionary leader, an outstanding statesman and a passionate advocate for the people of Wales. They also highlighted his close connection with ordinary people, which earned him widespread admiration and respect across Welsh society.
Members of the British Bangladeshi community also attended the ceremony, including Mohammad Mokis Monsur, Secretary of the Cardiff Bangladesh Welfare Association, community leader Tahmina Khan, journalists Dewal Faisal and Syed Jewel Rahman, Vice President Selim Ahmed, Abul Kalam Mumin, and several other community representatives.
