SUST syndicate election held on August 9

After more than 5 years in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, the election of the policy-making forum 'Syndicate' will be held on August 9. Academic council elections will be held simultaneously. The deadline for submitting nominations for teachers is July 25.

As per section 24(1) (d) of the University Act-1987, the election will be held for two members of the University Syndicate and four members of the Academic Council as per section 26 (1) (j). Among the two posts of the Syndicate, Professor or Associate Professor in Category-1 and any teacher in Category-II can be selected; Two teachers will be selected from these two categories.

On the other hand, four faculty representatives who are not heads of departments will be elected as members of the Academic Council. Among these, two posts in Associate Professor category and two posts in Assistant Professor category will be held.

The last Syndicate and Academic Council elections in Shabi were held on 21 December 2017. Almost four years later, Shabir Syndicate elections were scheduled to be held on February 2, 2022. But before that, the election was postponed due to the anti-vice chancellor movement on January 16.

Even after almost a year and a half passed, the authorities could not organize the syndicate elections. But according to the law of the university, the term of elected members is two years. But after the last election, three years have passed since the time of re-election, but the authorities could not organize that election. The teachers are considering this as a 'violation of the rules'. Finally, the authorities are going to organize elections next month.

According to the election schedule, preliminary voter list will be published on July 13, objections to the preliminary voter list will be filed on July 17, final voter list will be published on July 20, collection of nomination papers from July 23 from 9 am to July 25 at 11 am, nomination papers will end on July 25. .

Selection of nomination papers and publication of candidate list on July 25 at 5 pm, withdrawal of candidature on July 30 at 12 noon, publication of final candidate list after 12 noon on the same day. Then on August 9, polling will be held from 10 am to 4 pm in the meeting room located on the fourth floor of Administrative Building-2.

Among the total 13 members of Shabir Syndicate are Vice-Chancellor President and Registrar Member Secretary; Nine posts are held by government nominees; Elections are offered among university teachers against two memberships.

Two panels of pro-Awami teachers won all posts in the last Syndicate and Academic Council elections. At that time, the panel of pro-BNP-Jamaita teachers did not win any post.

Zaheer bin Alam, professor of civil engineering and environmental science department, was elected as two members of Syndicate in the last election from Category-1 (Professor or Associate Professor) on behalf of pro-Awami "Great Liberation War and Free Thought Practices United Teachers" panel.

From category-2 (any teacher) Professor of Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science Department on behalf of the panel of "Teachers United in Great Liberation War and Free Thought Practice". Mustabur Rahman won.

The four member posts of the Academic Council were won by the teachers of the 'Teachers inspired by the spirit of the Great Liberation War' panel in the Associate Professor category and the Assistant Professor category.

They are Associate Professor of Sociology Anwar Hossain and Associate Professor of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Asif Iqbal. Assistant professor of computer science and engineering category. Saiful Islam and Assistant Professor of Architecture Department Subrata Das was elected.

The teachers said that three panels of teachers were active in the previous elections. At present four panels of teachers are active. Among them are pro-Awami, pro-Awami-Left, BNP-Jamaat and only BNP supporters panels. This activism was seen most recently in this year's teachers union elections.

However, the teachers said that time will tell whether the panels will be active in the Syndicate or Academic Council elections.
