The three-day Harmony Festival (Season 2), organized by the Bangladesh Tourism Board, concluded in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, showcasing Bangladesh’s rich cultural diversity, ethnic heritage, and spirit of communal harmony.

The colorful festival officially came to an end at around 9:45 PM on Sunday, June 21. The primary objective of the event was to preserve the unique cultures of ethnic communities while promoting the growth of the tourism industry.

The festival brought together the cultures, traditions, and lifestyles of 27 ethnic communities living across the Sylhet region. Through traditional dances, folk songs, cultural performances, handicraft exhibitions, indigenous cuisine, and various cultural exchange activities, the festival grounds became a vibrant gathering place celebrating diversity. Participating communities included the Khasi, Garo, Manipuri, Tripura, Sabar, Kharia, Rikiasan, Baraik, Kandh, Rajballabh, Bhuiya, Santal, Oraon, Lohar, Munda, Kurmi, Bhumij, Bunaraji, Ganju, Mridha, Telugu, Gaur, Ravidas, Painka, Koiri/Bhojpuri, Kalindi, and Kora communities.

According to the organizers, Harmony Festival is more than just a cultural event. It serves as a platform for promoting mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and social harmony. One of its key goals is to introduce the traditions and heritage of diverse ethnic communities to both domestic and international visitors while highlighting Bangladesh’s multicultural identity.

Held in the tourism-rich destination of Sreemangal, the festival also emphasized the promotion of sustainable cultural tourism. Organizers focused on encouraging local economic activities, creating employment opportunities, and ensuring community participation through tourism development.

Artists from various communities performed traditional songs, dances, and religious rituals. Dedicated exhibition stalls showcased handwoven textiles, traditional jewelry, hunting tools, handicrafts, and cultural artifacts. Visitors also had the opportunity to experience a variety of indigenous foods and traditional delicacies.

The festival created marketing opportunities for locally produced goods, opening new prospects for small entrepreneurs. Products made by women from ethnic communities, including handicrafts, clothing, and traditional items, attracted significant attention from visitors. The event also highlighted the importance of women's economic empowerment and self-reliance.

Another major focus of the festival was the development of community-based tourism. Through this approach, local communities are encouraged to become active stakeholders in tourism by presenting their culture, heritage, and lifestyle as tourism assets. This allows tourism benefits to reach local people directly.

Cultural festivals similar to Sreemangal’s Harmony Festival are celebrated around the world under different names, including Harmony Day and Harmony Week in Australia, the Hornbill Festival in India’s Nagaland state, and various multicultural community festivals across Asia and Europe.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Sreemangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Ziaur Rahman said, “We will soon witness Harmony Festival Season 3. We have successfully brought together the immense diversity of the Sylhet region on one platform, which is a matter of pride and joy. People of all religions, ethnicities, and communities in Sreemangal came together under one roof to celebrate this festival. We are committed to organizing future editions on a larger scale with greater beauty and efficiency.”

At the closing event, Saleha Binte Siraj, Director of the Bangladesh Tourism Board and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, thanked visitors for their enthusiastic participation and support.

She stated, “The primary objective of Harmony Festival is to showcase the heritage of Sreemangal and the cultures of ethnic communities to the world. Compared to last year, significant improvements have been made in the festival’s presentation and arrangements. In the future, we aim to organize even more vibrant, aesthetically rich, and heritage-focused events.”

She further noted that although Harmony Festival Season-2 was originally planned for December, various circumstances required it to be held during the monsoon season. Despite the challenges, the event was successfully organized. She announced that Harmony Festival Season 3 is expected to take place on a larger scale during the second or third week of January 2027.

The three-day event was not limited to entertainment. It served as an effective platform for cultural preservation, strengthening social harmony, and promoting sustainable tourism development. Organizers and stakeholders hope that Harmony Festival will continue to play a significant role in presenting Bangladesh’s cultural diversity and tourism potential to the global audience.

Role in Tourism and the Economy
The Bangladesh Tourism Board plans to organize the festival annually at the Fulchhara Tea Garden grounds in Srimangal. Establishing a fixed annual schedule will enable both domestic and international tourists to plan their visits in advance, further strengthening community-based tourism and supporting the local tourism economy.
