GREEN REVOLUTION IN NORTH SHIELDS
Labour Stronghold Falls to Green Party for First Time Since 1990
Martin Anthony Osborne
NORTH SHIELDS – In a seismic shift for local politics, the Green Party has secured a historic victory in the North Shields ward, unseating the Labour Party for the first time in over three decades.
This is a vote for a different kind of future for North Shields, People told us they felt ignored, and today they’ve sent a clear message that they want local action on the issues that matter. - Martin Anthony Osborne
Martin Anthony Osborne was declared the winner in the early hours of Friday morning following the local elections held on 7 May 2026. Osborne clinched the seat with 1,156 votes, narrowly beating out Reform UK’s Andrew Anthony Mitchinson and the long-serving Labour incumbent Frank Lott in a three-way photo finish.
The Results at a Glance:
- Martin Anthony Osborne (Green Party): 1,156 (ELECTED)
- Andrew Anthony Mitchinson (Reform UK): 938
- Frank Lott (Labour Party): 934
- Maureen Jeffrey (Conservative): 192
- Charis Pollard (Lib Dem): 84
The result sent shockwaves through the North Tyneside Council chamber. North Shields has been a reliable Labour bastion since 1990, but a surging Green campaign focused on local environmental protections and housing standards appears to have resonated with a changing electorate.
"This is a vote for a different kind of future for North Shields," Osborne stated during his victory speech at the Lakeside Centre. "People told us they felt ignored, and today they’ve sent a clear message that they want local action on the issues that matter."
While the Labour Party maintains overall control of North Tyneside Council under Elected Mayor Karen Clark, the loss of North Shields highlights a growing fragmentation in traditional voting blocs across the North East.
