Smrity Azad: A Voice for Culture, Community, and Justice
Vote for positive change. Vote Labour.
Blackwall & Cubitt Town stands at an important moment. In a rapidly changing community, what’s needed is not just political representation, but leadership that understands people’s lives, culture, and everyday challenges. Smrity Azad is a name many already trust in that role.
With over 30 years of service in the UK, Smrity Azad is a dedicated cultural activist, community leader, and human rights advocate. Her journey began in Bangladesh, where from a young age she was deeply involved in theatre, recitation, music, and progressive cultural movements. These early experiences shaped her lifelong commitment to justice, identity, and community.
After settling in London in 1995, she recognised the need for a strong platform where the British Bangladeshi community could preserve and promote its culture. In 2012, she founded Docklands Theatre & Performing Arts, which has grown into a respected organisation supporting creativity, especially among young people, while bringing communities together through the arts.
As a theatre practitioner and organiser, Smrity has worked on productions that reflect the lived experiences of migrant communities, often highlighting voices that go unheard. She is also a well-known reciter and media personality, actively contributing to radio, television, and community platforms.
Her work extends beyond culture. Smrity Azad has been actively involved in human rights advocacy, raising awareness of injustice both locally and internationally. She serves as Vice President of the UK chapter of the “Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee” and Joint General Secretary of the Combined Literary & Cultural Council UK. For over 15 years, she has played a key role in organising the Bangladesh Book Fair in the UK, helping strengthen cultural ties and community engagement.
Politically, she is an active member of the Labour Party, serving as a GC member in Poplar & Limehouse and Women’s Officer for Blackwall & Cubitt Town. Her long-standing grassroots involvement and deep understanding of community issues position her as a strong and effective candidate.
In the upcoming local government elections, Smrity Azad is standing as a Labour Party candidate for Councillor in Blackwall & Cubitt Town, alongside mayoral candidate Sirajul Islam and fellow council candidates Alex Stanly and Anwar Punekar.
Her commitments are clear: safe and affordable housing, empowerment of women and young people, and building a secure, inclusive, and united community. She believes in being a visible, accessible, and accountable representative—not just during elections, but every day.
At a time like this, leadership matters. Smrity Azad represents experience, integrity, and a genuine commitment to people.
On 7th May, your vote is not just about choosing a candidate—it’s about shaping the future of your community. Support Smrity Azad and be part of building a stronger, more united Blackwall & Cubitt Town.
Vote for positive change. Vote Labour.
