An international protest rally organised by the World Human Rights Organisation UK was held on Tuesday at 5pm in the historic Altab Ali Park in East London.
The demonstration was organised in response to the recent killing of Ramisa, as well as incidents involving violence against women and children, rape, attacks on journalists, and broader allegations of human rights abuses.
The rally was chaired by the organisation’s President, Ashikul Islam Ashik, and jointly hosted by General Secretary Lovlu Loskor, Dr Azizul Ambya, and Zakir Hossain Selim. Members of the British-Bangladeshi community from a wide range of professional and social backgrounds took part in the gathering.
Addressing the event as chief guest, former BBC journalist Shamim Chowdhury said that the protection of human rights, the rule of law and freedom of expression remained essential for the development of a civilised and democratic society. He called for effective measures to tackle violence, abuse against women, attacks on journalists and what he described as a culture of impunity.
Speakers at the rally demanded a thorough investigation and swift justice in the Ramisa murder case, as well as other recent incidents of serious violence. They also called for stronger safeguards for women and children, greater protection of human rights, and an environment in which independent journalism can operate freely.
Among those who addressed the gathering were human rights activists and community representatives including Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, A S M Misba, Mujibul Haque Moni, Nazmin Sultana Shikha, Mohon Miah, Abdul Quddus, Jahirul Islam, Humayun Kabir, Jamal Ahmed, Angur Ali and Zakir Hossain Selim.
Other speakers included Faisal Ahmed, Abdul Helal Chowdhury Selim, Motabbir Hossain Chunu, Abdul Jalil Chowdhury, Abdur Rob, Shoil Miah, Muhammad Sahed Rahman, Abdul Bachir, Advocate Bazlur Rashid, Mufti Abdul Wadud, Mujibul Haque Mujib, Imdadun Khanam, Jessica Chowdhury, Ripa Akter, Shah Lovely Rahman, Jamila Khanam and several others.
At the conclusion of the event, speakers urged the international community to play a more active role in defending human rights worldwide, combating discrimination and oppression, and strengthening public support for the protection of fundamental freedoms. They also reaffirmed their commitment to speaking out against all forms of killing, rape, abuse and human rights violations.
