Indian Tourist Visas for Bangladeshi Citizens Resume June 28

The cross-border travel landscape between Bangladesh and India has reached a major turning point. Ending a nearly two-year freeze on general leisure travel, official diplomatic sources have confirmed that tourist visa applications for Bangladeshi citizens will officially resume on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

The landmark announcement was made by the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, immediately following a high-level briefing at the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) located at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka. The decision marks a significant milestone in normalizing bilateral relations and rebuilding deep cultural and economic connections after a prolonged suspension.

The Path to Reopening: Context Behind the Two-Year Freeze

The complete halting of standard tourist visa processing dates back to the massive political shifts of August 2024, which resulted in the ouster of the Awami League government. Following widespread civil instability, several Indian diplomatic assets and multiple visa processing hubs faced severe security challenges. Due to safety concerns, New Delhi was forced to aggressively scale down consular footprints across the country.

During this 22-month restricted operating phase, the Indian High Commission prioritized essential humanitarian pathways. Despite severe security constraints, limited operations were maintained across key regional centers to facilitate emergency medical treatment visas, student enrollments, and critical business transit.

Following the transition to the newly elected government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman earlier this year, extensive diplomatic dialogues, high-level structural exchanges, and strengthened security assurances have paved the way for the complete restoration of one of the world's busiest cross-border travel corridors.

Phase 1 Rollout: Active Regional Processing Centers

To ensure a smooth transition and maintain strict administrative oversight, the resumption of tourist visa services is being implemented through a structured, phased rollout strategy.

Starting June 28, tourist visa applications will be accepted exclusively at five designated regional hubs:

+-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+
| Authorized Active IVAC Location | Primary Regional Service Zone |
+-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+
| Dhaka (Jamuna Future Park Hub) | Capital Territory & Central Districts|
| Chattogram Center | Southeastern Commercial Corridor |
| Rajshahi Center | Northern Division Sectors |
| Sylhet Center | Northeastern Spiritual & Tea Belts|
| Khulna Center | Southwestern Industrial Zone |
+-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+

The State Bank of India, which operates the IVAC network under official contract, has extensively hired and trained new contractual teams to manage the expected surge in application volume. The remaining 11 visa application centers scattered across Bangladesh will undergo structural safety inspections and staff training before reopening in subsequent operational blocks.

Essential Requirements for the Restored Tourist Visa

While the application doors are reopening, consular authorities are enforcing strict validation parameters to eliminate fraudulent filings and manage the heavy backlog. Applicants must prepare a comprehensive document stack before securing an appointment token:

  • Passport Validity Standards: Your international passport must possess a minimum validity window extending at least 6 months past your intended date of entry into India, featuring a minimum of two completely blank facing pages.

  • Verified Financial Solvency: Applicants must present a recent, certified bank statement covering the last 3 continuous months, displaying a minimum closing balance of $150 USD (or equivalent in Bangladeshi Taka) or an official international endorsement on their credit card.

  • Proof of Status and Professional Ties:

    • Corporate Employees: A formal No Objection Certificate (NOC) on original company letterhead alongside a valid corporate ID.

    • Business Owners: A legally translated and verified Trade License or corporate registration certificate paired with tax clearance numbers.

    • Students: An official enrollment letter from their academic department or an active institutional student card.

  • Utility Backing for Address Verification: A clear copy of a recent utility bill (Electricity, Gas, or Water) issued within the past 3 months, matching the exact residential address stated on the online visa application form.

Strategic Booking Advice for Early Applicants

Because historical data shows that over 1.6 million Bangladeshi nationals travel to India annually—with more than 60% traveling specifically for leisure, retail, and family visits—demand for appointment slots is projected to break records within the first 72 hours of the portal going live.

To navigate the initial rush successfully, applicants are strongly advised to complete their digital forms on the official IVAC portal (ivadb.com) late at night or during off-peak morning hours to avoid server timeouts caused by extreme web traffic.

Furthermore, ensure that the primary port of entry selected on your form (e.g., Haridaspur/Benapole land border, Gede/Darshana rail corridor, or Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport) matches your actual travel itinerary, as changing routing preferences after visa print execution is heavily restricted by border authorities.
