GREEN BREAKTHROUGH IN SOUTH SHIELDS
Rana Rahman Secures Historic Win in Beacon & Bents
Counillor Rana Rahman
SOUTH SHIELDS – In one of the most significant results of the 2026 local elections, the Green Party has solidified its presence in South Tyneside as Rana Rahman was elected to represent the Beacon & Bents ward.
I’ll be a strong voice for our community, focused on real change and delivering what local people deserve - Rana Rahman
In a hard-fought contest that saw a high turnout at the polls, Mr Rahman emerged victorious with a commanding 1,470 votes. The result marks a major milestone for the Greens in the region, reflecting a shifting political landscape in what has traditionally been a Labour heartland.
The final tally for the top three candidates was:
- Rana Rahman (Green Party): 1,470 votes (Elected)
- Sue Stonehouse (Green Party): 1,324 votes
- Sarah McKeown (Green Party): 1,275 votes
The clean sweep for the Green candidates in the ward follows an intensive grassroots campaign. Speaking shortly after the declaration at Temple Park Centre, a jubilant Mr Rahman expressed his gratitude to the voters and the "army of volunteers" who supported his bid for office.
"I want to say a massive thank you to the Green Party campaign organisers and every single volunteer who helped and supported me through this successful campaign," Mr Rahman said.
Addressing the residents of Beacon & Bents directly, he added: "Thank you so much for putting your trust in me. I’ll be a strong voice for our community, focused on real change and delivering what local people deserve."
The victory comes as the Green Party continues to make inroads across the North East, capitalising on local concerns regarding environmental standards, social housing, and community services. Political analysts suggest that the "Rahman Result" is a clear signal that voters are looking beyond the two-party system for solutions to local issues.
Mr Rahman is expected to take his seat at South Tyneside Council next week, where he has promised to prioritise local transparency and green infrastructure projects.
