Argentina Edge Switzerland in Extra Time to Reach Semis
Argentina Advance to World Cup Semifinals
Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semifinals with a thrilling 3-1 extra-time victory over 10-man Switzerland in a dramatic quarterfinal at Kansas City Stadium.
Argentina started the match on the front foot and took the lead in the 10th minute. Alexis Mac Allister headed home from a Lionel Messi corner to give the Albiceleste an early advantage. Despite dominating possession and creating several attacking opportunities, Lionel Scaloni's side was unable to extend its lead before halftime.
Switzerland responded positively after conceding but struggled to break down Argentina's well-organized defense. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez remained solid whenever called into action, ensuring Argentina carried a 1-0 lead into the interval.
The Swiss emerged with greater intent after the break and nearly equalized in the 50th minute. However, Lisandro Martínez produced a crucial defensive intervention, while Switzerland also failed to capitalize on a promising chance.
The equalizer finally arrived in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye finished from a Ricardo Rodríguez pass to make it 1-1.
Switzerland suffered a major setback just five minutes later. Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation, reducing the Swiss side to 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Argentina pressed relentlessly with the numerical advantage, but Switzerland's disciplined defense held firm through the end of regulation and stoppage time, forcing the contest into an additional 30 minutes.
The breakthrough came in the 116th minute when Julián Álvarez curled a superb shot into the net to restore Argentina's lead.
Lautaro Martínez sealed the victory deep into stoppage time of extra time, making it 3-1 and confirming Argentina's place in the last four.
With the victory, Lionel Messi and Argentina advanced to yet another FIFA World Cup semifinal, keeping alive their hopes of defending the world title.
