Welsh Senedd Election Reshapes Wales’ Political Map

The Welsh Senedd election took place on Thursday, May 7, with voting held from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for all 96 seats. The election was completed successfully in a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere.

On Friday, May 8, the results began to emerge one by one as returning officers in each constituency announced the outcomes after the vote count.

Reporting from Cardiff, Wales, journalist Mohammed Mokis Monsur said that with the full results now declared, a new political map of Wales has come into view. Many are describing the day as a historic moment in Welsh politics.

Plaid Cymru, Wales’s national party, has become the largest party in the Senedd, winning 43 seats, just six short of an overall majority. Reform UK, a newly established force in Welsh politics, secured second place with 34 seats.

Meanwhile, Welsh Labour suffered a major defeat after 27 years in power in the Welsh Assembly, winning only 9 seats. The Conservatives took 7 seats, the Green Party won 2, and the Liberal Democrats secured 1 seat.

Although Plaid Cymru emerged as the largest party, it remains short of the 49 seats needed for a majority and will require support from other parties to form a government. Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said he would engage with other parties in an effort to establish a new Welsh government, and confirmed that his party would nominate him for First Minister.

In a dramatic development, Welsh Labour leader Eluned Morgan became the first sitting Welsh leader to lose her seat in an election. Following what she described as a disastrous result for Labour, she resigned and said she was taking full responsibility for the party’s poor performance.

Dan Thomas of Reform UK is set to become the official Leader of the Opposition, heading a group of 34 largely inexperienced Senedd members as the second-largest party. He has called for cooperation from all sides.

In the Welsh parliamentary election, none of the four British-Bangladeshi candidates who contested were successful.
