UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Announces Resignation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide general election victory. The decision follows months of mounting pressure from within his party amid declining public support and disappointing election results. 

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he had accepted that he no longer commanded the confidence of enough members of his parliamentary party. He described the decision as difficult but said it was made in the interests of both the Labour Party and the country. 

In an emotional address, Starmer reflected on his time in office, highlighting efforts to restore economic stability, strengthen Britain's international standing and reform public services. He also thanked his family, colleagues and supporters for their backing during his premiership. 

The Labour Party is expected to begin the process of selecting a new leader in July. Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is widely regarded as a leading contender to succeed Starmer, although other senior Labour figures could also enter the race. 

Starmer's resignation marks another significant chapter in British politics. Despite securing a historic election victory in 2024, his government faced persistent challenges, including economic pressures, internal party divisions and growing competition from opposition parties.
