Makbul Wins Best Documentary at UK Asian Film Festival 2026

British Bangladeshi filmmaker Makbul Chowdhury has secured the Best Documentary Award at the prestigious UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF) 2026 for his film Mamun: In Praise of Shadows (Chhayabandana).

The award-winning documentary was screened to a packed audience at The Garden Cinema in Holborn, Central London, on Sunday at 4:20 PM.

The film offers an intimate and profound exploration of the life and legacy of Nasir Ali Mamun, Bangladesh's most celebrated portrait photographer. It captures his extensive artistic journey, unique vision, and creative philosophy in vivid detail.

During a panel discussion following the screening, director Makbul Chowdhury revealed that the project was entirely self-funded, born out of deep respect and admiration for Nasir Ali Mamun’s body of work. He expressed how the overwhelmingly positive response from diverse audiences across various screenings has been a significant source of inspiration.

More than a mere biography, the film serves as an inquiry into an artist's creative universe, aesthetics, and philosophical depth. Through an observant lens, the director highlights Mamun’s life, his craft, and the hidden narratives within his iconic photographs.

The screening was attended by prominent British Bangladeshi figures from across the UK, further underscoring the cultural significance and high level of interest in the production.
