As part of efforts to ease tensions and normalize relations, Dhaka and Delhi have taken an initial step by moving to resume full-scale visa services. While Bangladesh has already started issuing visas to Indian citizens across all categories, India has set a target to gradually restore its visa operations over the coming weeks.
This information was reported by the Indian news outlet The Indian Express.
According to the report, during a recent visit to India by Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Dhaka highlighted the normalization of visa services as one of its top priorities.
It further stated that Bangladesh’s visa centers in New Delhi, as well as in Kolkata, Agartala, Mumbai, and Chennai, are currently operating at full capacity.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, said that visa operations, which were temporarily suspended in December last year, resumed in February. Since then, around 13,000 Indian citizens have been granted visas across various categories, including business, tourism, medical treatment, and family visits.
As part of efforts to normalize bilateral relations, a delegation led by India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, visited Dhaka in February and attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Tensions between the two countries had escalated following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024 after a mass uprising, during the tenure of the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
