Keir Starmer Under Pressure After Labour Election Setback
Keir Starmer
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure from within his own party after Labour suffered significant losses in the recent local government elections across the UK. The political fallout has triggered growing calls for his resignation as both Prime Minister and Labour Party leader.
The crisis deepened after Home Office minister Jess Phillips resigned from the government, publicly criticising the party’s direction and leadership. Her departure has intensified concerns inside Labour over Starmer’s political future.
Reports from several British media outlets suggest that more than 80 Labour MPs have either openly questioned Starmer’s leadership or demanded discussions about his future. Under Labour Party rules, a formal leadership challenge can be triggered if support from 20 per cent of Labour MPs is secured. With Labour currently holding more than 400 MPs, that threshold is believed to be around 81 lawmakers.
Despite the growing unrest, Sir Keir Starmer has rejected calls to step down. Speaking after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, he insisted that he would continue leading the government and said no formal leadership contest had begun.
Jess Phillips Resignation Adds to Pressure
Jess Phillips, one of Labour’s most high-profile ministers, resigned from her safeguarding role in the Home Office amid disagreements over the government’s political direction.
In her resignation statement, Phillips reportedly expressed frustration over what she viewed as a lack of urgency and clear leadership at the top of government. Political analysts say her departure represents one of the most damaging resignations Starmer has faced since entering Downing Street.
Some reports have also suggested that another minister privately urged Starmer to consider an “orderly transition” to new leadership, highlighting the scale of concern inside Labour ranks.
Local Election Losses Trigger Internal Revolt
Labour’s poor performance in the local elections appears to have been the turning point. Several councils regarded as traditional Labour strongholds recorded disappointing results, while parties such as Reform UK and the Greens made gains in some regions.
The election losses have fuelled fears among Labour MPs that the party could face broader voter dissatisfaction ahead of future national elections.
Senior Labour figures are now being discussed as potential successors if pressure on Starmer continues to grow. Westminster speculation has centred on names including Wes Streeting and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, although neither has announced any leadership ambitions.
What Happens Next?
According to Labour Party procedures, internal dissatisfaction alone does not automatically remove the leader. Any formal challenge would require nominations from MPs followed by a wider leadership process involving party members and affiliated unions.
For now, Starmer remains firmly in office and continues to lead the government. However, with cabinet tensions rising and criticism becoming increasingly public, political observers believe the coming weeks could prove critical for both Starmer and the future direction of the Labour Party.
